Logging Burned Forest Area Destroys Black-backed Woodpecker Habitat

A new report was just released January 6th by the Center for Biological Diversity and the John Muir Project outlining the important ecological benefits of last summer’s Rim Fire in Northern California and exposes how a U.S. Forest Service plan to allow 30,000 acres of logging in the burned area will cause significant harm to wildlife, water and the regrowing forest. Check out my latest West Coast Beat Writer post over at 10000 Birds for all the information and photos.

Good information, Larry! Helps to understand the important role of fire in an ecosystem but, more importantly, puts a spotlight on potential harm from the proposed logging industry plan.
    Great video!

Larry, what a precarious and ephemeral cycle for birds like this. I haven’t read the report yet but bookmarked it and will soon. I had never even heard of this species until I read your post. As always, thanks so much for the insight and elucidation.
