Sandhill Crane Migration Is Underway at 10000 Birds

Sandhill Crane at Modoc NWRSandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) at Modoc National Wildlife Refuge photo by Larry Jordan

Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) are migrating back northward to their breeding grounds. I photographed this crane and his mate at Modoc National Wildlife Refuge about a month ago and will be writing a post for the Wildlife Conservation Stamp blog soon on that Northern California refuge.

Check out my latest West Coast Beat Writer post at 10000 Birds on these charismatic ancient birds. You can also click on the photo above to see the full sized image of this photograph which has also been added to our Wildlife Conservation Stamp Flickr page!

Great and informative post at 10,000 birds, Larry! Our Florida resident Sandhills are busy making new Sandhills! Have been seeing lots of little yellow/orange fluff balls tagging along with Mom and Dad. Spring is here!

Thanks for the comment Wally! They must start a little earlier in Florida, they are just doing their mating dances here in Northern California. I will be heading back up to Modoc National Wildlife Refuge in May to see if I can photograph some of the birds nesting. According to the ranger there, the colts are expected in late May. I can’t wait to see those little ones running around 😀
