Anna’s Hummingbird For My World Tuesday

Anna’s Hummingbird is the only hummingbird found along the Pacific Coast in the winter and I still have a few wintering with me.  Even after we had snow on the ground for two weeks.  These little birds are tough!

To see how hummingbirds make it through these freezing winters, check my post on Hummingbirds In A State Of Torpor.  Then go see the other great photos at My World Tuesday!

The Anna’s Hummingbird is the most common hummingbird found in Southern California. It is also one of three species of hummingbirds, along with Allen’s and Costa’s, that are permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada. Also, unlike most other species of hummingbirds, they have a minimal song.

The Anna’s Hummingbird was originally only found on the Pacific slope from Baja California to San Francisco. This bird has increased its population and expanded its breeding range in recent years to Vancouver, British Colombia, east to southern Arizona. This expansion is believed to be due to the introduction of exotic flowering plants, especially Eucalyptus, red-hot-poker and tree tobacco, and by the proliferation of hummingbird feeders.

The Anna’s Hummingbird likes to use the bird bath. They like to get a drink on hot days. They especially like bird baths that drip as they can hover and sip water as it runs over the edge. They will also perch on the edge and drink as other birds do but they only sit still for a minute.

Beautiful shot! I really love to watch the hummingbirds. My in-laws feed them in northern Michigan and get quite a variety in the summer. Thanks for visiting Ft McHenry with me. I, too, wondered how many men it took to lift one of those cannon balls!

What a lovely photo of this delightful hummingbird. I live along the coast in Southern California and have many hummingbirds in the citrus trees in my yard , but I’ve not yet been able to capture any like this. Thanks for visiting Sacred Ruminations and leaving the link back here. It’s nice to encounter you in this virtual world.
    Hugs and blessings,
