If you want to see a regal hawk of the West, check out my latest West Coast Beat Writer post of the Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) at 10000 Birds. It not only includes photos of light and dark morph birds but a slow motion video of this magnificent raptor.

What a wonderful capture!!! I’m not a birder, but I enjoy trying to get photos of various birds in our area and when on vacations!!! I’ve gotten a flamingo in flight an eagle as close as your photo, and a fabulous pelican!

    Thanks for visiting MammothLakesDP!!!

That hawk is close to being an eagle. I had one fly right up to our window in New Mexico and was astounded at its imposing size. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas, Larry!

My son and I recently saw a hawk which looked like a ferruginous hawk. Given that this hawk is a “western bird” could we have seen one given that we saw it in a tree near our home in Toronto, Ontario?

@Kent there have been sightings of vagrant Ferruginous Hawks in the east. Check out this post by John Thaxton who saw one in Vermont! http://blog.timesunion.com/adirondacks/how-to-piccata-a-rare-hawk/785/
